A Story of Twin Brothers and a Family’s Quiet Strength
By Jennifer Lakosil
For more than twenty years, I’ve had the profound privilege of volunteering at the Wings of Angels Clinic in Agua Prieta, Mexico. Every day brings families with big hearts and heavy burdens, but some stories stay with you forever—like the one of two precious twelve-month-old twin boys and their devoted parents.
David with his parents.
When the family first walked through our doors, the contrast between the brothers was heartbreaking. Little David, born with an imperforate anus, arrived pale, weak, and lethargic. His tiny body trembled with a weak, barely audible cry as bloody stools drained from his double colostomy openings. He looked up at me with such quiet vulnerability that it tugged at my heart. Beside him, his identical twin brother—let’s call him Mateo—was a bundle of pure sunshine. Round-cheeked and full of energy, Mateo smiled brightly, chattered happily, and waved his little arms from his father’s loving embrace. The difference in their conditions was stark, yet the parents held both boys with equal tenderness and fierce determination.
The family had already faced more than any young parents should. After seeking help locally, they were referred to a specialist in Hermosillo—three long hours away by bus. But they had no money for the trip, no way to afford the journey that could save David’s life. They were exhausted, worried, and running out of hope.
At the clinic, we listened, we examined, and we acted. To stabilize David, we gave him Pedialyte. We provided funds for a special soy formula his body could tolerate, and covered the transportation costs so the family could reach the specialist without delay. It wasn’t a miracle cure—just basic care, nutrition, and a little financial bridge.
One month later, the transformation was a miracle. The family returned with a thriving David—eyes bright, color in his cheeks, and a stronger cry that now carried the promise of a healthy future. Mateo was still his joyful, energetic self, but now the brothers could grow side by side, playing and exploring the world together as twins should. The parents’ faces glowed with relief and gratitude. What had stood between their children and wellness wasn’t a lack of love or effort—it was something as simple as bus fare and the right nutrition. This was followed up with physical therapy, which led to David taking his first steps.

This family’s story reminds me why Wings of Angels exists. With just a modest amount of support—funds that many of us might spend on a single meal—we helped turn fear into hope and frailty into strength. Small acts of compassion created a lifetime of possibility for two precious little boys and their loving parents.
Your generosity can write more stories like this. Every donation, no matter the size, becomes the bridge that carries families across impossible gaps. Thank you for caring enough to help children like David and Mateo not just survive, but truly thrive.
